The 2009 MICA Illustration Showcase which used Skype to connect graduating IL Seniors with art directors and designers in the NYC area led to many great networking opportunities including several commissions for work. Na Kim IL ‘09, who was matched with NY Times Op-Ed Page art director Leanne Shapton, produced this piece for the Times and has also gotten several of her pieces on Thumbtack Press:

In a recent NY Times article on Google asking illustrators to let them use their artwork for their new Google Chrome pages, noted illustrators like Gary Taxali, Joe Ciardeillo and Melinda Beck are quoted as taking a stand. They are among many other illustrators asked for the same “free” work. The discussion can be read on Drawger.com. The article goes on to say Google sees no problem with the request despite Google reporting profits of $1.42 billion  in the FIRST QUARTER of this year! And cites they have secured other illustrators who see this offer as an opportunity. As educators we must continue to raise awareness on the value of the work we do as artists. What appears to be an opportunity to some is a patent devaluation to all the rest of us. As students, it is imperative you understand what is going on in the world of business and keep good company.

In March ‘09 Warren Linn’s collaged composition of a New York subway interior developed from his visual journalism work was selected for publication in American Illustration 28. From a record-breaking 8,100 illustrations submitted, a distinguished jury selected only 381 illustrations for publication in the book to be published November 2009.

Linn is currently collaborating with Baltimore filmmaker Michael Lawrence on his Bach Project.
