Last year, Utrecht Art Supplies launched a National Art Competition to mark 60 years of serving American Artists. With over 6,000 entries, response to our inaugural competition was overwhelming– in volume of contestants and the quality of work received exceeded all expectations! This year, Utrecht is proud to join American Artist Magazine and The Grand Central Academy of Art in presenting our 2nd Annual Contest where we expect to attract even more participants in a broad spectrum of styles, subjects and media.

The winners of the Words on Wheels transit poster project will be launched at the MTA North Avenue Light Rail facility [just north of the Gateway] first floor. Baltimore City Middle School student poets, their parents, the MTA and the MICA illustrator/designers will be on hand to celebrate this collaboration and place printed posters in Light Rail cars and buses. The winning posters will be seen for one year around Baltimore City and one special wrapped bus will feature a collage of the winning poster art and poems.

Niv Bavarsky IL’10 has the honor of being the first MICA IL student to have work accepted in the Communication Arts Illustration Annual. This professional illustration competition draws entries from across the US. Bavarsky’s entry, the poster he illustrated, designed and handlettered for the MICA Halloween dance is shown here. This year’s four Zankel finalists included MICA’s Becca Stadtlander, chosen from hundred of entries from art colleges across the US. This is the 3rd year for the Zankel and the 2nd year MICA has placed in the finalist group.

The finalists are treated to a day in NYC prior to their interview for the award. This $20,000 scholarship is given to a rising senior who has been first nominated by their department, submitted a portfolio of images, written an essay and then selected for entries from throughout the US. Congratulations to Becca for all her hard work on the Zankel.

THE DEADLINE IS FEB 4TH, but please do not wait until then to turn in your work.
All submissions should go to the IL office (F316A)


images for jurying:
72dpi, rgb,saved as a jpg at 500 pixels on the longest side (horizontal or vertical)
(NOTE: you will need to submit a high res version at 300dpi if your piece has been accepted)

please make sure your file names include your last name, a descriptive title and the piece number
example: smith_sunset_02.jpg

entry fees:
$5 per entry, cash or check
please make checks out to MICA

information to include:
in addition to your images, please provide the following information for your pieces either hardcopy (legible!) or as a Word doc on disc:

Awards and Publication
Over $50,000 in cash rewards and other scholarships will be presented to award-winning students. Cash awards range from $500 to $5000. All accepted artwork will be reproduced in a full color catalogue that is distributed within the industry. All students with accepted artwork will receive a Certificate of Merit. These certificates will accompany the original art upon it’s return.

 

IMPORTANT DATES:
Deadline for entries: February 4, 2009
Awards presentation: May 8, 2009
Exhibition: May 6- June 6, 2009
Artwork Pickup: Week of June 8, 2009
Eligibility:
1. Must currently be an undergraduate student who is a matriculating arts major in an accredited art school, college, or university. High school students and graduate students are NOT eligible. 
2. Entries must be submitted in group form by schools only, NOT by individual students.
3. Each student and school may submit as many entries as they wish.
4. Work must have been created within this academic year (January 2008-December 2008).
FEES:
There is an entry fee of $5.00 per entry. Each school can issue one check to cover all of the entries per school.
JURY
1. Approximately 125 works will be accepted by the juries in the preliminary judging. Judging is by an anonymous, lightbox system which insures fairness since the jurors have no indication of which student or which school they are viewing.
2. Once selected in the preliminary judging, the original artwork will be requested for final review and awards selection. Digital prints are only accepted for digitally created works and must not exceed 18″x24″. Students will be notified at the time of their acceptance into the competition. 
3. Student transcripts must be provided for all students accepted into the show. Professor and class from which the accepted artwork has originated must be highlighted.
IMPORTANT: Students who do not have a transcript submitted will be removed from the competition.
