Student William Niu Illustrator’s Club Exhibition 15

IL student William Niu has been accepted in this year’s Illustrator’s Club exhibition. The show will be held at PEPCO’s Edison Place Gallery in downtown Washington, DC from May 13, 2010 to June 26. There will also be a catalog made for the show which will be distributed to regional art directors.

Internship Opportunity At Concrete Hermit, LONDON

Concrete Hermit requires a committed intern, over a 3 month period, to help with the day-to-day upkeep of our blog and social networking sites. You will be required to maintain a level of high quality, regular blog posts, and keep their Facebook and Twitter feeds updated. They will require you to visit exhibitions, shops, artist’s studios and other places that might be of interest to visitors to concretehermit.com. You’ll be expected to write confidently and knowledgably about them.

The right person will be allowed plenty of freedom to do and see what they want, so someone with a knowledge of Concrete Hermit’s ethos is really important – they want you to excite and inspire them!

Applicants must:

*Provide evidence of knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and goings-on in illustration (and graphic design, although this is less essential) in London, the UK, and further afield, today.
*Possess excellent communication skills
*Possess good computer skills: Office and Photoshop knowledge is essential.
*Be able to use an SLR camera and take photos to a good standard.
*Possess the ability to use initiative in finding things to review, write about and critique.

We’d like to invite you to our first annual Nuts & Bolts conference.
¶ This intense day-and-a-half conference will explore the business side of illustration with heavy emphasis on self-promotion and marketing and the basics of setting up your business.
¶ We’ll talk about how to build a better site. How to get your foot in the door. How to negotiate fees. Understanding contracts. Working with art directors. Deciding between having a rep or not. We’ll look at the past and the future of illustration. We’ll share the three things every successful illustrator knows and talk about the do’s and don’ts of being a young illustrator.

¶ We’ll encourage you to interact with our speakers and ask questions before, during and after the conference at a special cocktail reception.
¶ We’ll offer studio tours, a complimentary online portfolio review and printed materials that you’ll take with you.

Online Music Mag Opportunity

One of their primary goals is to create opportunities for musicians and artists from other disciplines and media to collaborate and inspire each other.

100 Heads for Haiti

100 Heads for Haiti was conceived by Spur Design as a way that 100 artists could contribute equally to help raise money for Doctors Without Borders in the wake of the earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010. Invited artists contributed original drawings, paintings, collages and prints of a head that would be sold for $100 with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders.

Exhibition curator David Plunkert says ,”This event was a way for 100 artists to unify as a group in an effort to do help others. The illustration community’s response has been tremendous and many artists went well beyond what they were asked to do.”

The exhibition opened in Spur Design’s gallery on April 10, 2010. The entire collection of heads has been collected on a group poster that is available for purchase.

Four take home prizes in the Society of Illustrators Student competition

Congratulations to IL alum Alex Uyeno [who graduated in '09] for receiving the $2000 in Memory of Bernie Fuchs award, to senior Yelena Bryksenkova ['10] who received the $1500 in Memory of Helen Wohlberg Lambert and Herman Lambert award, to senior Willem Rosenthal ['10] who received the $500 in Memory of Meg Wohlberg award, and to sophomore Yao Li ['12] who took home one of the Society’s top prizes: the $500 in Memory of Frances Means award PLUS a 2 year scholarship to The Art Department, formerly called The Illustration Academy. The Art Department is a year round, non-accredited school based in 4 locations around the US [San Francisco, Austin, Richmond and Kansas City] has a faculty of renowned award-winning illustrators http://www.theartdepartment.org/info.shtml. This prize will be deferred until Yao’s graduation. The value of this prize is $40,000.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Society of Illustrators of NY on May 7th
